Echodrone - Cold Snap
In a few sentence’s time I’m going to say the words ‘shoegaze’ and ‘San Fransisco’. I’m asking you not to stop reading. I know there are 16 million shoegaze bands in San Fransisco. I know a lot of them sound the same. But these guys definitely have something different - so don’t give up on me yet. Here we go.
Echodrone are a shoegaze band from San Fransisco. This track, Cold Snap, is from their most recent release Bon Voyage. Now what makes them different you ask? There’s an energy here. There’s a drive to their music which doesn’t always appear in shoegaze. Too often bands hide behind their metric-shit-ton of reverb and create a nice, floaty sound that doesn’t really go anywhere. Cold Snap’s strong rhythm backs the intricate, layered guitar and the vocal harmonies to give a track that sounds like a song, instead of a snapshot. The sound is all-encompassing but still delicate and the motif ‘It’s so cold without you’ really hits home.
The rest of the album brings variation and shows the band are willing to try new things and explore different ideas. Acoustic sprawler Infinite Arms is worth a listen, as is the more frantic Under An Impressive Sky. The album is available here.
